Wall Candle Holder - Real or Electric

I have a cousin who lives outside of Denver, Colorado. A few weeks ago, he called me to get some information on my opinion of different types of wall candle holders for his log cabin home in the Rocky Mountains.

He was remodeling his living room and den. Because of the rustic theme of his log cabin home, he was asking me for ideas or suggestions on what might fit into the decor of these two rooms.

I told him for me to really help him in his search for the perfect wall candle holders, I would have to take the trip out to his home and have a look at what each of these rooms has in them. This way I could make an informed decision on the types of wall candle holders that would match up with the theme of each of these two rooms. Besides, I haven’t been out there for a visit in quite some time and I was eager to visit with him and enjoy the beautiful Colorado Rockies.

A few days later I had booked a flight to Denver and rented a car.

It was a Saturday morning when I pulled into his driveway. Before I left for the trip to Colorado, I jotted down a few questions on a notebook that I wanted to ask my cousin once I got to his house. These questions are basic wall candle holder questions on what type of wall candle holders he might be looking for.

The first question I asked was if he was looking for wall candle holders to hold real candles or was he looking for electric wall candle holders. Electric wall candle holders are actually electric lights with bulbs that are in the shape of a candle flame.

He told me that he was open to installing both real candle holders and electric wall candle holders. He informed me that two of the wall candle holders, being installed in the den, will be hard wired to the wiring already in the wall, but in the living room he would like to install wall candle holders that use real candles for light. This way he could use scented candles to freshen up the room.

The next thing we did was to walk into the living room and see what types of furnishings are in the room. Sometimes the smaller accents of a room’s furnishings are more compatible with wall lighting fixtures than the larger more pronounced pieces of furniture in the room.

This was a large living room. He had two large oak framed chairs and a large couch that matched. Large deep cushions filled out both the chairs and the couch. Earth tone stripes crisscrossed was the pattern of the covers for the both the chairs and couch. Also in the room are two recliners. One of the recliners is black leather and the other is micro fiber in a beautiful royal blue.

The log walls in the room gave the room a rustic feel and the stone fireplace going up the wall was the focal point of the room. The floor was a plush pile carpet in a medium brown.

I couldn’t help but notice that bronze accents were all about the room. On one wall was a bronze wall sculpture of several elk. On another wall was a large bronze metal wall art sun.

It was on the wall with the large bronze sun that he wanted to hang a wall candle holder on each side of this metal wall art. After thinking about it for a few minutes, I suggested that he should go with an open wall sconce candle holder made of wood. Something that would hold a pillar candle at least four inched in diameter and eight to ten inches tall.

The second set of wall candle holders were to be hung on the wall directly above the stone mantle of the fireplace. Here I noticed that he had wrought iron fireplace tools on a stand over to the left of the fireplace. He also had a wrought iron screen placed directly in front of the open fireplace. It was so obvious that wrought iron wall candle holders would be the perfect match for the wall above the fireplace mantle. He agreed.

So now we moved on to the den. This was a magnificent room. The floors are hardwood floors. As with all the walls in this home, they are all log walls. What struck my attention was a gray stone two sided fireplace going straight up through the ceiling, separating the den from the study. The furniture in this room was all black leather. There are five chairs, a couch and a love seat. There are also two coffee tables and five end tables. The table tops are made of black smoked glass and the framework supporting the glass was pewter.

On one wall was hanging a medium size tapestry of a mountain lake. On another wall was a large wooden wall clock about five feet in diameter. He told me that he intended to install a wall candle holder on each side of the tapestry and another set of wall candle holders on each side of the wall clock.

After looking around the room and contemplating for a while, I came to the conclusion that a wrought iron candle holder on each side of the tapestry would be the perfect solution. He liked the idea and decided to go with battery powered candle lamps.

The large wall clock already had two rather ugly hard wired wall lights on each side. He said that these two wall lamps have been an eye sore to him for quite some time. He just never got around to changing them out to something more attractive. That is when I suggested that electric pewter wall candle lanterns would improve the overall look of the room. He said that wall candle lanterns had never crossed his mind, but it was a good idea and he would make the change.

My cousin wrote down all of my suggestions. I gave him a great website that had all the information he would need to explore all the suggestions I made. Within a month my cousin had ordered all his new candle wall lighting fixtures and had them up and working brilliantly.

Wall Clock - Only in Your Dreams

It was a very wintry morning in the upper Midwest. The night before it had snowed about 8 inches of the white powdery stuff. It’s 6:00AM and I’m out in my driveway shoveling the snow to clear the way for my car.

It took me about 2 hours to complete the snow removal job around the outside of my home. And like always, I shovel off the snow around my retired neighbor’s house. Agnes is 78 years old and she just doesn’t have the strength to handle the snow removal anymore. She always invited me in (after I shovel around her house) for a cup of hot coco.

Well this day was no different than the past. When I finished shoveling around Agnes’s house, she stuck her head out the front door and invited me in. You know, hot coco always tastes best after a good workout in the winter snow.

During my visit with Agnes, she said that she had a wall clock in her living room that stopped running. She said that the batteries must have gone dead. So we both went into the living room and sure enough, the large wall clock in the living room was not running. I proceeded to remove the clock from the wall and changed the batteries with batteries Agnes had already bought. She was so pleased that the clock on her living room wall is now running again.

Next thing you know, my cell phone is ringing. It’s my mother. She said that she had a dentist appointment and that when she went to start her car, the car would not start. I told her I would come over to her house and give her a ride to the dentist. When I got over to my mother’s house, we had no time to spare, so we got in my car and drove off to her dentist appointment.

It was on the way to the dentist, my mother mentioned that the clock in her kitchen was not working. I told my mother that when we got back to her house, I would check to see if the batteries are dead and replace them if they are dead. When I mentioned batteries, my mother said that it would also be a good idea to pick up some new batteries at the hardware store on the way home from the dentist. She also said it would be a good idea to change the batteries in all her smoke and gas detectors. I said that I would do all the battery changing when we get back to her house. This put a smile on her face.

By the time I got home it was 4:00PM. I took my shoes off, put on my comfy slippers, put on the late afternoon news on my TV and sat down in my recliner to watch the news.

This is when it all started. I must have fallen asleep immediately. The adventure I went through in my dream had everything to do with what went on earlier in the day.

My dream started out with me shoveling snow in front of a retail store. I was on the sidewalk in front of the store clearing away the snow. The good part is that I was almost finished clearing the snow from in front of the store. This storefront sidewalk had to be as long as big city block. I’m feeling beat, as though I was shoveling snow for several hours in front of the store. A good feeling has come over me, knowing that my snow shoveling job has finally come to an end.

As I’m standing outside in front of the store, I look up to the front outside wall of the store and a big lighted sign reads “WALL CLOCKS MAMMOTH MART.” I’m thinking to myself, “Where am I?”

My curiosity overwhelming me, I decide to go into the store and have a look. Well let me tell you that this is the largest store I have ever seen. It would probably take 5 to 10 minutes to walk from the front of this store to the back. This is how large this store is.

The second thing I notice, after the store size, are wall clocks. Walking down the main isle, I’m thinking that there must be every type of wall clock in the universe on display here. This is amazing!

There was a display for every type of wall clock imaginable. These displays seemed to be set up in random order. As I slowly walked from the front of the store to the back I saw wall clock styles such as Country, Children's, Novelty, Antiqued, Kitchen, Cuckoo, Modern/Contemporary, Rustic/Lodge, Retro, Traditional, Whimsical, Old World, Sports/Collegiate, Neon and the list went on and on and on…

On display along with the style of each wall clock was a sample of the different types of finishes these wall clocks came in such as Brass, Wrought Iron, Medium Wood, Dark Wood, Light Wood, Black, White, Silver/Chrome, Multi-Colored, Rattan/Wood, Blues, Bronze, Greens, Brass-Antique/Satin, Pewter, Stainless Steel and this list of finishes also went on and on and on…

As if this wasn’t enough information for each wall clock display to provide, each display also provided samples of available features some of these wall clocks offered, such as Day Clock, Musical, Atomic Clock, World Clock, Single Chime Clock, Dual Chime Clock, Triple Chime Clock, Gallery Clock, Weather Clock, Neon Clock, Picture Frame Clock and With Pendulum. Like I said about style and finish, this list also went on and on and on…

There were themed wall clocks such as Animal, Educational, Floral, Food and Drink, Holiday, Retro, Scenic, Sports/Cars and Tropical/Nautical. There were clock types such as Indoor Clock, Outdoor Clock and Indoor/Outdoor Clock. There were clock number types such as Roman Numerals, Arabic/Standard and No Numbers. There were samples of display types such as Analog and Digital, not to mention sample of shapes such as Rectangular, Round, Square and Novelty Shapes.

I’m telling you, these wall clocks come in sizes from small to as large as 7 feet in diameter, for those who are interested in a wall clock in the size of their choosing.

By the time I reached the back of the store I was well educated in Wall Clocks. I was amazed at what was available to choose from when it came to these wall hanging time pieces. I thought to myself that not only do these wall clocks supply me with the time of day, along with other optional features, these wall clocks provide an artful and elegant touch to the room in which they hang.

And then all of a sudden as if it was the top of the hour all the chiming, musical, cuckoo, bell and electronic clocks rang out in one tremendous alarm. This woke me up as I jumped from my recliner. I realized I was only dreaming about this humongous wall clock store. I thought to myself what a wonderfully strange dream.

My afterthoughts of my dream were me thinking, “Is there really a store of that size dedicated to wall clocks?” After pondering over that thought for a few minutes, I came to the conclusion that the only place you could find the variety and selection of the wall clocks in my dream, would be to shop online.

DIY Flooring Home Improvements - Hardwood Floors

Hardwood floors are popular for good reasons. They're durable, attractive and easy to care for.

Hardwood floors can last a hundred years or more with proper care. Many modern manufacturers feel comfortable giving a 50-year warranty on the hardwood flooring they sell. Their confidence is justified. Look at homes from the turn of the 20th century that have been well-maintained and you might well see the original flooring.

One of the major reasons for this is that the term hardwood floor exactly describes what the material is: hard wood, very hard wood. Brazilian Teak, Walnut, Mahogany, Cherry and many other flooring materials are made from trees with extremely strong and dense fibers. They stand up well to walking, vacuuming where the rotation brushes are often left on and many other forms of daily punishment.

But durability is only one good reason that hardwood floors are so popular, and perhaps not the most significant reason. Hardwood floors are beautiful. Those same trees that offer such long-lasting material are not just attractive while growing. They form the base of flooring material that is esthetically pleasing to nearly everyone.

They appeal to the senses of sight and touch. Whether it's the dark, soothing brown of a fine Mahogany or the lighter look of Maple, they show color and finish that will dress up any home. The grain lends a flair to any floor design while evoking hints of nature that invites walking on. They may have the rich, sensual look of a deep red Cherry or convey a happy mood from a light Ash.

Hardwood floors are also easy to care for.

Certainly scratches, wear on veneer and other problems can occur with even the hardest of hardwood floors. But no other material allows for sanding, refinishing, crack repair and other fix-it methods like hardwood flooring.

Even everyday care is simplicity itself. Often a little swipe with a cloth dustmop is enough. Spills are easy to remove, thanks to the fine wax or polyurethane finishes applied to hardwood floors. Stains are rare on a properly finished hardwood floor, but when they occur they can often be bleached out, sanded out or covered over with a fresh coat of wood stain.

Hardwood floors are not without their potential downsides, of course. They are more expensive up front than many other options. They are subject to expansion and contraction that can reveal poor installation or even lead to cracking. They can readily look shabby if not properly maintained.

But on balance, those who want a long-lasting, beautiful flooring will often opt for hardwood flooring for one very good reason. It's simply outstanding.

Caring For Your Floor

A good hardwood floor with proper surface treatment will resist coffee, tea and other common kitchen spills well. But hot coffee can easily melt through wax and before long make its way into small grooves where it's nearly impossible to get out. Stronger compounds, like grease and acid-containing tomato juice can be even larger problems. Wipe them up completely and your hardwood floor will last for years.

Avoid scraping furniture over hardwood floors. Make the extra effort to lift it up before moving sideways. Once a scratch is made in the surface of hardwood, the only way to get it out is to sand it out and refinish, or use wood putty and stain to cover it up. Felt on table and couch legs will help eliminate the problem before it can occur.

Excess sunlight will, over time, fade even the best hardwood floors. Keeping curtains closed or having a diffuser curtain will cut down the incident UV that does the damage. Using louvres rather than blinds allows you to direct the sunlight up and away from the floor, bouncing it off the walls and ceiling. That drastically cuts down on any UV radiation reaching the floor.

Treat the floor regularly with a protective compound made especially for hardwood floors. That will help deflect sunlight and provide partial protection against stains and scratches.

Brazilian Walnut or Teak, American Oak and other hardwood floor materials will often be sold with as long as 50-year warranties. But that covers only major defects in the plank. Surface scratches, scuff marks and stains can occur in any wood surfaces so they're not covered. Keep problems at bay as long as possible by the proper care and treatment of your hardwood floors.

They also include safety features to help ensure the device can be used safely. Sensors are built in to detect objects in the shaft that might disrupt the device. They are also designed so that the door can not be opened if the lift is not present.

Installing these lifts is usually easier if it is done as the home is being constructed. They are also often installed after a home has been built. The main concern is finding a distance between floors that can be used as the dumbwaiter shaft. The shaft needs to be completely straight and it needs to have an opening that can be accessed on each floor. If you can not find an area for the shaft, you can often use the space in a closet. The lift can also be configured so the door opens on different sides on each floor.

Once you have an area that will work as the shaft, it is a matter of installing the track, drive system, wiring, and dumbwaiter car. The reason a track is used is because it is able to keep the lift more stable and balanced.

Many lifts come in large part already assembled. This makes it a lot easier to install. Usually with these kits, the drive system and car are installed together, so they can be installed all at once. By cutting out these steps, the lifts can be put into a home much more rapidly and in a more reliable manner.

Saving Eyesight With Craft Lights

Anyone who is familiar with crafting knows that there is no craft under the sun that doesn't require some level of visual acuity. Sewing, cross stitch, modeling and beading, among many others, all demand that the eyes work overtime if the thing is to be done right. That is where utilizing task-specific craft lights can make all the difference in the quality of one's work.

Why do you need to consider the kind of lighting that you use? It's simple--because the light that we receive (and the lack thereof) can have an astounding impact on our physical, emotional and mental well-being. Working in insufficient light will not only cause headaches and eyestrain, but can even lead to mood disturbances if the body's requirement for sunlight isn't met (and who wants to be moody while doing something that you're supposed to love?). Even so, it's remarkable just how few of us are aware of how much our lighting really matters.

There are a number of features that you should look for in a quality crafting lamp. The first thing that you'll want to look at is the type of bulb. Standard incandescent bulbs really are insufficient for craft purposes, because even though they may be bright enough (after all, they do come in the 150-watt variety!), the light that they produce is imbalanced and washed out. Bright doesn't mean a whole lot if what you're seeing isn't really accurate. Regular fluorescent lights have much the same problem--they use less power, but the colors just aren't quite right.

A third, less well-known choice are Ott lights, which were developed recently to use a low-glare, full-spectrum light that much more closely mimics the effects of sunlight. These sorts of bulbs are a good choice for craft lights because they are low glare, low power (typically 10 to 25-watts), and the colors are much more accurate than with regular light bulbs.

The next step is to find a product that meets the physical needs of the space you are working with.

Do you have a small work space that's packed with furniture? A desk lamp with a small footprint may be the right choice.

Conversely, if surface space is harder to come by, a floor lamp may be what you're looking for. This is an especially nice option for sewing tables that may already have a lot of things on them, or for standing behind a comfy recliner for illuminating embroidery or similar arts.
